How the Job Runs

Sod installation in Mount Prospect runs through 8 stages.

Stage 1

Measure and quote. The lawn is measured for square footage, and the quote covers sod, soil, removal, disposal and labor.

Sod delivery. Sod arrives fresh off the farm and gets laid within 24 hours of harvest.

Stage 7

Laying and rolling. Sod is laid in a staggered joint pattern with tight seams, cut clean around beds and walks, then rolled to press the roots into the soil.

Stage 8

First watering. The lawn is soaked on install day until water reaches 3 to 4 inches (7.6 to 10 cm) into the soil beneath the sod.

Sod vs Seed in Mount Prospect

Sod gives a finished, usable lawn in 2 to 3 weeks. Seed takes 8 to 12 weeks to fill in and needs daily water through the entire germination period.

Choose sod for 5 situations: a lawn needed fast, a slope where seed washes out, a front yard where a thin stand looks bad through the whole season, a yard with dogs or kids using it now, and a repair next to existing turf that has to match.

Shade is the deciding factor on most Mount Prospect properties. A back yard under mature maples gets a fescue-heavy blend. A full-sun front yard gets straight Kentucky bluegrass.

Soil Preparation and Grading

Soil preparation decides whether sod roots or sits. Mount Prospect sits on Prairie Till Plains soil, clay-heavy and slow-draining, and clay that has been driven on by construction equipment is compacted to the point where roots stop at the seam.

Sod needs 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) of workable soil beneath it. Prep runs in 4 steps: strip the old turf, break up compaction in the top 6 inches (15 cm), work in 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7.6 cm) of compost or screened topsoil, and fine-grade to a smooth surface with a landscape rake.

Grade runs 1 to 2 percent away from the house and away from patios, which moves rain off the lawn without erosion. The USDA Web Soil Survey and the University of Illinois Extension both publish soil data for Cook County, and a soil test through the Extension gives pH and organic matter numbers on a specific lot. Target pH runs 6.0 to 7.0 for cool-season turf.

When to Install Sod in Mount Prospect

Sod installs from mid-April through late November in Mount Prospect, any time the ground is not frozen. That is a wider window than seeding.

Spring, mid-April to early June. Cool air, regular rain, and roots establish before summer heat.

Fall, late August to late October. The strongest window. Soil holds summer warmth while air cools, so roots grow with almost no heat stress.

Summer, June to August. Workable with more water. Summer sod needs 2 to 3 waterings a day for the first 2 weeks.

Late fall, November. Sod laid on unfrozen ground roots slowly and goes dormant, then greens up in spring.

Sod roots fastest when soil temperature holds above 50°F (10°C). The last spring frost lands around mid-May and the first fall frost around mid-October.

Watering New Sod

New sod dies from lack of water, not from anything else. The watering schedule runs 4 weeks.

Install day: Soak until water reaches 3 to 4 inches (7.6 to 10 cm) into the soil below the sod. Lift a corner and check.

Days 1 to 14: Water 2 to 3 times daily, roughly 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) per session, keeping the soil under the sod wet at all times. Early morning first, midday in heat.

Days 15 to 28: Cut back to every other day and water longer, pushing roots deeper.

After 4 weeks: 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 3.8 cm) per week including rainfall, in 2 sessions.

Keep off the lawn for the first 2 weeks. Sod knits to the soil in 10 to 14 days, checked by pulling up a corner. Sod that lifts free needs more water and more time.

First Mow and First Fertilizer

Mow the new lawn when the grass reaches 3.5 to 4 inches (9 to 10 cm), usually 14 to 21 days after install. Cut to 3 inches (7.6 cm) with a sharp blade, take off no more than a third of the leaf, and stay off the lawn with a heavy riding mower for the first month.

Starter fertilizer goes down with the install. Illinois restricts phosphorus lawn fertilizer under state law, with an exemption for establishing new turf, which makes the install the one point in a lawn’s life a starter blend applies. The next feeding follows 4 to 6 weeks later.

Utility Marking and Village Rules

JULIE (811) locates are required before any digging or sod cutting in Illinois, with 48 hours notice. A&N places the locate request on every job. Hand digging is required within 18 inches (46 cm) of a marked line.

Old turf and soil leave the property on A&N’s trucks. Mount Prospect Public Works runs yard waste collection for residents, and yard waste goes in paper bags, never plastic.

A sod replacement at existing grade needs no village permit. Regrading that changes how water leaves the lot can require review from the Village of Mount Prospect, and A&N confirms that before the work starts rather than after.
